While
at the vet one day I read a poster about beagles making good
house pets, debunking some myths that I had about the breed.
Since that day I thought a beagle would make a great companion for
my young
dog Baz.
We went to the SPCA after we moved into a house that could accommodate
two dogs. In the pen was an adorable beagle, cowering in the
very back of her little shelter, terrified of me and almost everybody
else. A flop as a hunting dog, she had been ditched in the woods
and spent several months in the woods near many cabins. Stella
had been chased away, beaten, had rocks and sticks thrown at her for
trying to get food in the area until finally a kind woman managed to
catch her and bring her to the SPCA.
Stella is getting along
just fine in her new home. She's still jumpy when she's eating,
but otherwise very (almost too) affectionate. Baz enjoys having
a playmate, but has a hard time sharing the attention and treats in
the house.
