Hunter Is His Name
By Michelle

There is not only abuse in Newfoundland

My name is Michelle and we also rescued a beagle close to our home town in Ontario. Our beagle's name was Duke he is now Hunter. Poor old Duke the place where we got him was very dirty. Poor old Duke smelt really bad he was not feed properly, you could see the bones through his thin coat.

Let me take you back the kids wanted a puppy where we previously lived they did not permit animals so when we moved we promises to get them a dog.

For Christmas that year the children asked for money to buy a pet, that's all they wanted. Well everyone knows how hard it is to house train a puppy in the winter so we told them to save their money and when spring rolled around we would look for a dog. One day as I was reading through our local paper I saw an add advertising two beagle dogs to give away. The add claimed that the dogs were adults and needed a good home. I decided to talk this over with the kids telling them that it's not only puppies that need a home but older dogs also so we decided to go take a look. When we arrived on the property the lady had a nice home and had all kind of Pomeranians running around. We asked her to see the beagles that she had she took us to the back of the property. When we got to the back we saw this old shack she said that that's where the dogs were, she also told us that when she opened the door to block our noses that the smell was really bad. And it did she opened that door and there stood this poor little dog he was the cutest thing we ever saw. He was stuffed in the back of a cage all curled up in a ball. He had no water , no food. Immediately my daughter said that we couldn't leave him there, that we had to save him from this place. My son put him on a lead and we took him home.

He is now home with us the first year was hard for him. He was so thin. He was afraid of everything and never wanted to be left alone. He was afraid when we called him by name so we decided to change his name to see how he would react. Well there was almost an instant turn around when we called him he no longer shook and hid his tail he now wags and runs to us. He is so good with children and just loves to play, now that he knows how. He has learnt about 22 tricks from go fetch to play dead. He would not trust men afraid of getting a beating, it took about 2 months for him to even go to my husband, he now cuddles every night with the two of us. My children still don't understand how anyone could hurt him. He is so gentle and kind he is all of our best friend.
