I need a home !The Beagles of Saint Pierre

A neighbor to the island of Newfoundland is St. Pierre and Miquelon, a territory of France.  St. Pierre's Beagles are suffering from many of the same, or even worse, problems as are Beagles in Newfoundland and Labrador.  These dogs are used solely for hunting rabbits and are not considered as part of the family unit.  In some cases groups of dog houses (poorly constructed) can be seen on barren areas of land far away from any homes.  The only human interaction these dogs receive is when their owners come to feed them, which in some instances is not every day.  When questioned why these dogs were kept isolated from the community, we were told it is because they make too much noise.  Of course we all know that a group of dogs chained to dog houses, without proper feeding and attention, are going to kick up a fuss no matter what breed they are.  For those Beagles that do not hunt well or are no longer able to hunt due to age or infirmity, the future is very bleak -  many are shot or otherwise disposed of.  The lucky ones find their way to the Saint Pierre Animal Shelter where, under the direction and care of founder Benedicte Schoonover, they receive  veterinary care and lots of love.  However, the shelter's space is limited and they cannot focus all of their time and energy on Beagles.   After meeting with Benedicte, Beagle Paws has agreed to assist the Saint Pierre Animal Shelter in finding homes for these dogs.   To view some of the Beagles for adoption please click here

Protect My Life

As a pet owner you have an important job. This job is to protect your pets from harm. Your dog depends on you for everything including its health. We are receiving many reports of dogs becoming deathly ill due to the Parvo Virus. This virus is very deadly and sometimes the symptoms will only appear 7-10 days after the dog has come in contact with the virus. The symptoms include, vomiting, diarrhea, no interest in food or water and loss of energy. This virus mainly attacks young dogs, especially puppies. If not treated quickly the outcome is often fatal.

But there is something you can do as a responsible pet owner to protect your dog. VACCINATE. Prevention is the key. Contact your local vet to arrange a vaccination against the Parvo Virus. Your dog will love you forever for it!

Help me find a Home !How do I get Home?

Now that Rabbit hunting season is in full swing the number of stray and abandoned Beagles has  increased drastically.  Many Beagles get lost while  hunting, often ending up on busy highways where some are injured or killed.  The lucky ones are brought to local shelters. The dogs remain in the shelter until someone comes to claim them, but in the majority of cases no one comes for them.  This is where Beagle Paws steps in.  It is only through loving foster homes that we are able to help these dogs that in many cases would be euthanized.   Contact us to find out how you can provide a temporary home for a Beagle while we search for a permanent home.  The work is little and the rewards are great !  709-738-7297 or email info@beaglepaws.com

No turning back now !

PeteyPetey is another lucky dog who made his way to the safety of Beagle Paws.  You might remember a while back he came to us with a lovely female Beagle named Holly.  Both dogs have found great homes and have a second chance at a great life.

Petey's new Mom writes "Thank you for my special little guy! He brings me great joy each and every day.  Petey has been doing a great job in obedience training and we are going to start tracking soon.  Our goal is to work with the local Search and Rescue.  I can only hope more dogs like Petey get a new chance at life."  Eden in British Columbia

Sammy's Second Chance

Sammy and BradySammy's days were numbered when Beagle Paws got the call.  Luckily we were able to help this sweet dog out.  It is only through the caring foster homes that we are able to help Beagles like Sammy.  He now has a second chance at life.  Sammy is living in a great home in Alberta with his new pal Brady (Sammy is the adult dog in photo).  "Thank you for letting Sammy come and join my small little fur gang (two cats and now two dogs).  I hope that you find homes for all of your Beagles, and really hope people wake up and realize dogs are for life and should be treated like the family". Robin in Alberta.

You can call me Blue

Blue is very happy in his new homeHi, remember me? Some of you knew me as Burry, but now I have a new name. My mommy decided to call me Bluey after a famous dog in Australia who lived a long, long time. You can call me Blue, but not because I’m sad, that’s for sure. I was never this happy in my life! I get cuddles and kisses every day, and when my mommy and daddy call me their “Baby Blue” I just shake and wiggle with joy! I have a big yard to play in , and two brothers and a sister to keep me company. Teddy is my favourite. (Ssh – don’t tell the other two) He is my big brother and best friend in the whole world.  I follow him everywhere, and he doesn’t mind a bit. I think he remembers what it is like to be a stray, and maybe he feels sorry for me. (You can read Teddy's story on our Rescue Stories page and to read more about me and my new life check out the first issue of Beagle Paws Press due out in July)

Caught in the Act

Holly KnittingHolly is a lucky girl these days.  Now in her forever home, she even has a four legged friend to pal around with named Oskar.  She has never been happier.  Holly has come a long way from the hungry nervous pup who was found as a stray.  A playful and curious Beagle, Holly is "Caught in the Act" in this photo as she tries to figure out why cats get so excited over a ball of wool.

Hello from out West

Little Abby at 4 monthsLittle Abbey is all grown up.  She has come a long way from the frightened little pup who was found in the woods of Newfoundland.  She is now approx. 9 months old and living life to the fullest. Abbey has her own toys for playing fetch.  Although, we are told by her family, Jim & Esther Gellrich, that her favorite game is hide and seek.

Abby all grown up in her new homeAbbey is shown here (left) enjoying her big backyard at her new home in British Columbia.  Abbey who was originally named Goddar was adopted through Heavenly Creatures in St. John's in 2002 after being spotted on the Beagle Paws website.  She was fostered with one of our members until the adoption process got rolling.  We were so glad to help Heavenly Creatures find a great home for Abbey.

A Hunter's Point of View

Sally and HoneyI have hunted with kennel dogs and house dogs.  It is my personal opinion that kennel dogs cannot hold a candle to house dogs for rabbit hunting.  Not only that, but no kennel dog has as much fun as my dog does when she's in the woods.  When I put on my orange vest, she goes crazy!  And if she's not having a good day, or the scent is weak, we sit back and have a lunch and enjoy the great outdoors together.

A New Leash on Life

Bailey enjoying her new homeWavey an 8 month old female beagle cross, now known as Bailey, was only moments away from being euthanized when Beagle Paws got the call.   Luckily we were able to take Bailey into our care and within days she found a new home.  This is no ordinary home as Bailey now has a very important job.  She has the role of being an assistant to her new housemate Brandy (shown below).  Brandy is a blind 12 year old Labrador cross.

Bailey and BrandySince Bailey joined the Jacobs family Brandy has been experiencing life with a whole new energy.

Happy Days are Here Again!

Buddy in his new HomePaddy, now known as Buddy, is living life to the fullest.  Buddy's new owners write "He has certainly fit into our family. He is a wonderful little dog." He is a very lucky dog who is now part of a very loving family. Buddy is seen here with his new pals relaxing by the fire.

Badger Emergency Relief

On Saturday, February 15th a State of Emergency was declared in the Town of Badger by Mayor Gerald Hurley. The Exploits river rose 2.5 metres in one hour, forcing the evacuation of the town.  Families and over 80 animals had to leave their homes.  The SPCA in Grand Falls-Windsor opened their doors to these animals.  After hearing the news Beagle Paws quickly began a collection of cat and dog food.  We were able to send a van full of food out to the Grand Falls-Windsor SPCA and still have more waiting to be shipped out.  We would like to thank everyone who donated to this worthy cause.

It's a Dog's Life

Lemonte in his new homeLemonte (now known as Lenny) is enjoying the good life in his new home.  The days of struggling for food and shelter in the cold winter nights are now a distant memory for him.  He has adapted quite well to his new life and home.  He has a loving family and other beagle buddies to keep him company on the couch during those cold winter nights.

A true success story that we at Beagle Paws hope other unfortunate beagles will experience.

Beagle Paws makes the News!

On Friday, January 24th a story about Beagle Paws was featured on the show Country Wide, seen on the Country Canada network on digital cable and satellite.  This segment also aired on CBC Canada Now.  For more information and video please click here

Dora is a Fighter

Little 4 month old Dora wasn't always the happy, healthy puppy you see here. Dora started her life with Beagle Paws as a very sick puppy infected with
the Parvo virus.  Beagle Paws made the commitment to do everything in their power to save this little puppy.  After four days of hospitalization and a lot of TLC, Dora was released and is now recuperating.  During this ordeal one of our members developed a special bond with Dora.  I am happy to report that this Beagle Paws member has adopted Dora and offered her the best home a puppy could get.  Dora will always have a special place with our group. To find out more about the Parvo virus and how to prevent it please click here

Beagle Paws makes the local News

Beagle Paws made it's big local debut on NTV on Feb. 17/03.  A big thank you to host Deirdre Ayre and NTV for providing us with this opportunity to promote our group and to bring awareness to the plight of beagles in this Province. Also, we would like to thank the Mount Pearl Track and Field complex for allowing us to use their facility.

A new home for Chelsea

Chelsea was adopted from Beagle Paws on Feb. 1/03 by a lovely family in Gander, Newfoundland.  As you can see in this photo Chelsea fits right in with her new family and is enjoying all the love and attention she deserves.  Chelsea is proof that a beagle who has spent all its life living outside in a pen can adapt quite well to indoor life.

Blessed art thou

Me and my beagles in church A great event took place in St. John's on Sat. October 26, 2002 - the Blessing of the animals.  Creatures both great and small converged upon the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to receive a blessing.  The service was conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. This is a fairly new event to this area and has been organized by the wonderful volunteers of the SPCA. I took my two little beagles to be blessed, as shown in this photo.  We were joined by an impressive turn out of dogs, including numerous beagles. It was very nice to see so many people who have realized what great family members beagles make.

Seven Days

A documentary by the CBC program Land & Sea, which aired in 2002, documents the circumstances of three Beagles and their stay at the St. John's City Pound. A dry eye is not to be found when watching this documentary. It heightens awareness of the struggle many beagles face in Newfoundland and Labrador. The cruelty and abuse this program highlights is unfortunately all too common in Newfoundland and Labrador. Successful adoptions are small in comparison to the number of Beagles euthanized by the pound every year.

To obtain a video copy of this program please contact  CBC Television

Hi my name is Rookie

beagle inspection dog I was born in January 1995. My job is to sniff luggage and freight at Montreal, Canada international airports. I can detect fruits, vegetables, plants, meat, animals and animal products in order to prevent pests and other harmful organisms prohibited by law from entering into Canada.  Each day at airports all over the country, international travellers come in contact with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspectors. These inspectors are part of the front-line of defense against pests and diseases that could threaten Canada’s agriculture, population and environment.

For more information on CFIA’s (Canada Food Inspection Agency) Detector Dogs please visit the CFIA website.
