Big Max

As a rescue organization we deal every day with Beagles who have been abandoned and neglected.  However, we were hit with a dose of reality recently when a call came in about a pitiful creature that had been found wandering the streets.  His entire body was covered in feces and dirt, and he was crippling along with one paw bleeding.  The concerned caller took the dog aboard his vehicle, despite the dirt and smell, and went straight to the nearest vet.

Upon examination it was discovered that his collar was about five times too small and the vet had to shave away some of his fur to get at it. Its removal left an area of inflamed, blistered skin about two inches wide around the dog’s entire neck and throat. This five year old dog had likely been wearing his puppy collar. Evidently his owners hadn’t paid enough attention to their dog in the past five years to notice that he had grown to nearly 50 lbs. and needed a bigger collar!  Upon arriving in his foster home, hours were spent bathing him and removing mats of dead fur.  He was so weak he had to be carried up and down the stairs.  His foster parents  wondered if he would even survive the night.

Big Max, as he has been affectionately named, survived his ordeal and is well on the way to full recovery.  Thanks to the tender, loving care provided by his foster parents, he has regained his strength and enjoys daily walks and playtime.  But the thing he loves best of all is to be cuddled and massaged, groaning with every touch.

Five years of suffering and loneliness have left no emotional scars on Big Max. He is a cheerful, loving dog whose tail never stops wagging. His gentle spirit is a testament to the fact that a Beagle’s capacity for forgiveness knows no bounds.
