Beagle

UPDATE March 17 - After several weeks of being on a good diet, receiving the proper veterinary care, and of course getting lots of love, Sunny’s health has improved tremendously and he is gaining weight. Miraculously, he is now able to run, play, and chase his many beagle brothers and sisters around the yard!

We realize that it is quite likely that his health will deteriorate as he gets older, and that he will need daily medication to keep him comfortable; but for now we are all thrilled that he is pain free and happy. He is finally enjoying life the way a puppy should.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to Sunny’s health care over the past few weeks.  Your kindness is appreciated by all of us here at Beagle Paws, and especially by Sunny Beagle!

Sunny Beagle came into the care of Beagle Paws after being adopted from one of the cities local shelters, and then returned by the adoptive family.  By that time, he had had chronic diarrhea for several weeks that had gone untreated.  He was terribly underweight; his coat was dull and thin, and he had little interest in eating.

Within a few days of coming into our care, he began having trouble walking and could not hold his head up, so he would sit on his haunches in order to see people standing above him.  He began crying in pain when he was picked up and couldn’t get comfortable enough to sleep.  He often fell asleep sitting up and had to be propped up with a pillow. He crept around like an old, arthritic dog.  It was hard to believe he was a pup of just over a year.

It was discovered through x rays that Sunny has three bone spurs in his neck.  This is a very painful and lifelong condition which can shorten a dog’s life. After trying various medications that did not work, we were all very worried that Sunny would not recover. The next step was acupuncture and a course of steroids. His appetite has come back with a vengeance and his coat took on a healthy shine.

However, Sunny’s future is uncertain.  His quality of life may be compromised due to his neck condition and he will likely need medication and treatment from time to time to ensure his comfort. This sweet boy needs a special family who is willing to love and take care of him despite the risks.
